Choosing help with trees

Tree work near houses, roads and boundaries should be done by a qualified, insured tree surgeon. Ask about qualifications and insurance before work starts, and check whether the tree is protected by a tree preservation order or sits in a conservation area, where the council needs notice before most work. Your council's planning team can tell you.

Buying plants

Specialist nurseries grow plants that garden centres rarely stock, and often know what does well in local conditions. Some have limited opening days or sell mainly by mail order, so check before travelling.
