Teesside: gardens, nurseries and local help
From the riverside towns to the edge of the North York Moors around Guisborough, Teesside has urban yards, suburban semis and new estates, with a garden nursery, a pond specialist and a National Trust garden among its listings.
Gardening on Teesside
Close to the river and the coast at Redcar, wind is a factor, and many older homes have compact terraced yards. Suburbs and newer estates around Middlesbrough, Stockton and Ingleby Barwick bring larger gardens, often on clay and sometimes with the thin topsoil and compaction typical of new builds.
Towards Guisborough and the foot of the moors, gardens are a little higher and more exposed, with colder winters than the towns by the river.
Ormesby Hall, run by the National Trust, has gardens on the edge of Middlesbrough, and Windlebridge Garden Nursery near Guisborough combines a nursery with tearooms. For ponds and water features, Pondkeeper in Billingham has a shop and sells online. The local councils run garden waste collections; check your council's website.
